Textiles & Fiber - what is sustainable?: The history of textiles – from the slave ship to the shores of China and The industrial agricultural system. The ills of “fast fashion.” Global industry and the economics of extraction. Conventional fibres and textiles. Social justice. The worldwide effects of garment disposal. Who and what is beautiful? Deep culture versus personal style.

We’ll also dive into current sustainable fibre endeavours – such as

Bamboo fibre,
Tencel,
Soybean,
Seacell,
Rose,
Hemp fibre,
Ingeo,
Corn fibre,
Linen,
Flax fibre,
Ramie,
Mint fibre,
Banana Fibre
vegan fibres.
whilst learning how to use the fibres within the textile industry, from weaving to felting and much much more. Helping to create a cradle to cradle economy.

We will engage in rethinking fashion by considering the use of upcycled, recycled and local materials. To create balance and harmony by using non-animal produced textiles. We’ll also shine a light on vendors and designers doing good work on this front – across our world and right here at home!

Today, 246 million children age 5-14 work in garment factories across the world. Today, communities adjacent to industrial cotton fields are suffering from neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. Today, 75% of the clothing we discard in the Nordics is sent to landfills and incinerators. Today, a dressmaker in Africa is unemployed because we’ve saturated her village with our thrift store castoffs. Today, fashion is right behind oil as one of the most polluting industries on earth and consumption is rising.

The workshop includes all materials, handouts and tangibles as well as a diary to attach the samples and write your own comments about your research. It includes refreshments also.

we will be breaking from 12-1 for lunch, there is a store nearby or you can bring a lunch with you.

The lesson will be run in English and will have a max number of 12 participants
